Additional Details

"On my way here I met Col. Morris, Genl. Greene's aid, with letters informing me that Cornwallis was retreating towards Cross Creek, having left behind those of our men who were wounded & prisoners & a capt & 70 men of his own wounded; that, however, his [Greene's] force is not such as to enable him to injure the enemy on the retreat & begs reinforcements from hence. This agreed perfectly with the plan I had the pleasure to communicate to you, but I am sorry to inform you the Council have rejected it. In this situation I can only recommend to you to do the best you can with the means you have in hand, & inform me of what passes. My business will detain me at Chesterfield some time."
