Stodare was a well-known English magician around the middle of the 19th century, and introduced some inspired illusions, including the talking sphinx. He also authored several books, both much sought after today.
These are the only known photographic images of the great Stodare. The legendary sphinx or talking head is pictured on one of the photographs. The head rests on a ordinary table instead of the trick table used to create the effect.
