Fer-de-Lance. 8vo, publisher's gilt-stamped black cloth, top edges stained red with one small blemish; pictorial dust jacket, 1 inch closed tears at bottom of front flap fold and spine panel front, small chip to top of rear panel, head of spine panel with small chip with tiny loss of top of "R" in title, else letters unaffected, mild finger-soiling, spine panel faded slightly but colors uncommonly bright on front panel, unclipped with $2.00 price intact; interior clean and entirely unmarked. first edition of the author's first detective novel in entirely unrestored rare original dust jacket. The first appearance of the detective genius Nero Wolfe. Dust jacket with the Farrar and Rinehart "Recommended" sticker on the front panel, as issued with most known copies of the jacket. The last copy in original dust jacket sold at auction in 2002 (Christie's New York, Nov. 24, The Lackritz Sale, Part 2), with binding described as "worn." Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
