STRAND, PAUL (1890-1976)
"Mullen, Georgetown, Maine" * "Driftwood #1, Maine." Silver prints, 3 1/2x2 3/4 and 4 1/2x3 1/2 inches (8.9x7 and 11.4x8.9 cm.); each accompanied by a letter of authentication from Anthony Montoya (Aperture/Paul Strand Archive). 1928; printed no later than 1940

Additional Details

Originally from the estate of Edward Schwartz (a photographer and member of the Photo League), to whom Strand gifted the photographs no later than 1940. Strand was considerably involved with the Photo League, serving as a mentor to several of its emerging photographers.

According to Montoya (regarding both images), it is likely the prints were made from negatives taken with Strand's 5x7 inch Graflex camera which he acquired in 1931. The prints were probably gifted to Schwartz between 1936 and 1940.
