The print is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Anthony Montoya, then director of the Paul Strand Archive, dated Feb. 9, 1994. Montoya notes "There are no prints of the image in the Archive collection. However, it has the original glass lantern slide. . . " He further writes there are other prints in the Archive from the 1920s but, "Your print, made in 1912, is the earliest, and to my knowledge, only example."

Shaw was a close friend of Strand's who wrote to him regularly. Photostatic copies of correspondence accompany the lot.
