Evelyn Nesbit was an artists's model and vaudeville performer who became famous for her entanglement in the murder of her ex-lover, architect Stanford White by her first husband, Harry Kendall Thaw. She was apparently an inspiration for Charles Gibson's "Gibson Girls" illustrations and modeled for artists such as Frederick Church and Gertrude Kasëbier, attracting the attention of men along the way. The story of the murder was turned into a popular film called "The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing" and figures prominently in Edward Doctorow's novel and play, "Ragtime."
