Struss was greatly influenced by Clarence White and Alvin Langdon Coburn, members of the elite circle of photographers known as the Photo-Secession that was founded by Alfred Stieglitz. An imagemaker of the first rank whose views of New York City were especially hailed, art historian William Innes Homer noted that, "Struss often equalled White in his feeling for spatial composition, and equalled Coburn in sensitively capturing the mood of the city." In the 1920s Struss moved to Hollywood and became a cinematographer. He was awarded the first Academy Award for the feature film "Sunrise," in 1927.
