STUART DAVIS
Detail Study for Cliché.

Color lithograph, 1957. 321x375 mm; 12 5/8x14 3/4 inches, wide margins, with the printing registration marks center left and right edges of the sheet. One of only 3 artist's proofs, aside from the edition of 40. Signed and inscribed "Artist's proof" in pencil, lower margin. A very good, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, important American abstract lithograph.

According to Myers, "The color lithograph Detail Study for Cliché of 1957 was based on the configuration that appears in the lower half of two paintings dating to 1955, Cliché (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York) and Ready to Wear (The Art Institute of Chicago)." This subject is one of only two color lithographs created by the artist.

We have found fewer than 15 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Cole/Myers 24.
