STUART DAVIS
Detail Study for Cliché.

Color lithograph, 1957. 321x376 mm; 12 3/4x14 3/4 inches, wide margins. Signed and numbered 17/40 in pencil, lower margin. very good, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, important American abstract lithograph.

According to Myers, "The color lithograph Detail Study for Cliché of 1957 was based on the configuration that appears in the lower half of two paintings dating to 1955, Cliché (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York) and Ready to Wear (The Art Institute of Chicago)." This subject is one of only two color lithographs created by the Davis (1892-1964).

We have found fewer than 15 other impressions of this lithograph at auction in the past 30 years. Cole/Myers 24.
