The structure seen behind the figure is the Place Dancourt and the Théâtre de Montmartre, which was memorialized in a 1925 Eugène Atget photograph. Davis made several preparatory sketches of the building based on Atget's photograph for Theatre on the Beach. Cole/Myers 16.
