STUDIO LORELLE STUDIO 28. Circa 1930. 22x16 1/2 inches, 56x42 cm. Lorelle. Condition B / B+: replaced top margin; trimmed right margin; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and corners; horizontal fold. Studio 28 opened in Montmartre in 1927. It was the first avant-garde cinema in Paris. In 1930 the scandal that ensued when they screened Luis Buñel's l'Age d'Or caused the original owner to go bankrupt. Successive owners, however, maintained the same high level of independence and avant-garde standards. The cinema is still in operation today. Lucien Lorelle (1864-1968) was a French photographer who worked in many fields including books, portraits and advertising. He opened the Studio Lorelle in 1927 and received commissions from such prestigious clients as Galeries Lafayette (for whom he worked with A. M. Cassandre), l'Oreal, Pernod, Shell and Cinzano. This mysterious image of a flying car is typical of his virtuosity in inventing the most sophisticated photomontages. Very rare.
