Additional Details

Sun Ra, born Herbert Sonny Blount (1914-1993) pioneered collective improvisation, a technique sometimes heard in the music of Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. Sun Ra formed his famous Arkestra in 1953 fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms with bop and traditional big band jazz. The present poster was ceated by Grimshaw while working as art director for the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival (1972-1973). Wearing his hair at shoulder-length and definitely a "hippy," the Detroit Free Press said of Grimshaw "If he hadn't been the poster artist for counter-culture, he could have been its poster child."
