The skilled and artistic use of depth and contrast in this image was nearly overshadowed by the scandal it caused. Due to late-Victorian conservatism, Sutcliffe's clergy ex-communicated him for displaying this photograph of naked children. Eventually, a print was purchased by Prince Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and a future King, who appreciated its merits as an artistic nude.
