The collector Russell C. Veit was an artist and Standard Oil heir who spent time in Paris during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He became friends with fellow artist George L.K. Morris (1905-1975) who arrived in Paris in 1929 and later married Frelinghuysen in 1935. Morris introduced Frelinghuysen to European Modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque who inspired her to explore Cubism. She painted actively during the 1930s and 1940s, exhibiting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in Peggy Guggenheim's "Exhibition by 31 Women," Art of this Century Gallery, New York. Essentially abandoning her painting career in the late 1940s, she was also an accomplished opera soprano and appeared in numerous roles at the Metropolitan Opera, New York from 1947 to 1950.
