Additional Details

Luke Swank, born and raised in Pennsylvania, did not become a photographer until his 40s but quickly came to be championed by Julien Levy and Alfred Stieglitz, who were impressed with the strength of his documentary style. Although Swank's photographic career included a series devoted to the circus and the Bethlehem steel mills, it was his masterful photographs of Pittsburgh that are considered his most intriguing. Swank's career was cut short by his death in his mid-50s.
