Andrews (1898-1992) was born in Suffolk, northeast of London. She was unable to study art beyond high school due to her family's modest means, and instead apprenticed as a welder and worked at an airplane factory during World War I. By the early 1920s, she had moved to London and met the architect-artist Cyril Power, who became her mentor, and later her partner, until the mid-1930s. Andrews became the first secretary of The Grosvenor School of Modern Art, London, where she also attended Claude Flight's linocutting classes. She began producing linoleum cuts in the mid-1920s and, for the next decade, exhibited her prints widely through exhibitions organized by Flight.
