Born in Brooklyn in 1865, Laurence studied at the Art Students League and exhibited regularly in New York. He later settled in Cornwall, England in the artist's colony of St. Ives and then finally relocated to Alaska in 1904, becoming the first professionally trained artist to live in Alaska. He painted a variety of Alaskan scenes including the steam ships and sailing boats of the harbor and certain coves and streams, most likely the subject of the current work.
