The library formed by Sykes (1771-1823) " . . . contained a wonderful array of the finest incunabula, the Gutenberg Bible, the 1459 Psalter, the 1462 Bible, the 1469 Livy on vellum, and other books of the same class. Sykes had also collected Elizabethan literature and secured some of the choicest items from the Bibliotheca Anglo-Poetica [see lot 291]"--De Ricci, page 95.
