Scottish Manuscript Sermons & Tracts.
Angus, Scotland: circa 1738-1784.
Quarto format handwritten sermon texts on laid paper, each about one signature long, possibly written by a Reverend Lyall, who delivered his sermons in various towns in the region north of Dundee, Scotland, including Auchterhouse, Kirriemuir, Prosenhaugh, Cortachy, and others; with notations when the sermons were repeated, what year, and where; together with a longer work occupying about fifty pages, on idolatry, superstition, heretics, and the diabolical arts, and referring to Simon Magus and his infamous history; attribution to Lyall made by means of a note tacked to one sermon that reads, "These ten sermons sent me by Rev. Mr. Jolly of Berchin, as being by the late Mr. Lyall, but I am doubtful. Make some enquiry? Oct. 1844"; some tears, wear, each sewn only through the fold as single signatures; each manuscript measures 8 x 6 3/8 in.
