Shakespeare, William (1564-1616)
The Seven Plays Added by Chetwinde to the Third Folio.
London: Printed [by Roger Daniel, Alice Warren, and another] for P[hilip]. C[hetwind]., 1664.

Folio extract comprising 100 numbered and continuous pages; a large copy handsomely bound in full crushed blue morocco neatly lettered and tooled in gilt, with inner joints covered in leather, 13 1/2 x 8 3/4 in.

This edition represents the first appearance of Pericles in a folio edition of Shakespeare's works. Of the plays in this group: Locrine, The London Prodigal, The Puritan, Sir John Oldcastle, Thomas Lord Cromwell, A Yorkshire Tragedy, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre, only the last is accepted by modern critical consensus as Shakespeare's work.

Philip Chetwinde (fl. 1653-1674) married publisher Robert Allot's widow Mary and thereby inherited the rights to print all of the titles in Allot's stable, including the works of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and many other English poets. Although Pericles is attributed to the Bard, the other six plays are part of the great anonymous Shakespeare Apocrypha.
