Walter Augustus Simon (born (1916) is best known as an "abstractionist," according to fellow painter Merton Simpson. One of the older generation of Harlem Renaissance painters, Simon taught art to young people with the belief that "education in a democracy is not primarily concerned with developing 'great art or artists.' Rather it should be concerned with helping the 'average' student further to develop his sensitivities."
