Simpson, James Young (1811-1870)
Anaesthetic and Other Properties of Chloroform.

Edinburgh: Sutherland & Knox, 1847.

Octavo, first separate edition, originally published in the Monthly Journal of Medical Science, December 1847 issue; seven numbered pages; bound in later moiré navy cloth; 8 x 5 in.

Simpson was an obstetrician who contributed greatly to the field of anesthesia by practicing on himself. He and two assistants administered chloroform to themselves one evening and successfully knocked themselves completely insensible until the following morning, thus leading Dr. Simpson to further explore the use of chloroform as an anesthetic for childbirth and surgical operations.
