First edition, two large octavo volumes, illustrated by Tuffen West (1823-1891) with sixty-two monochromatic lithographic plates, and eight in color (two frontispieces and five plates at the end of the second volume lettered A through E); very nicely bound in uniform contemporary full russia gilt, marbled edges, nicely preserved (joints dry, corners slightly rubbed, 9 3/4 x 6 in. [Together with] A late 19th-early 20th century book of drawings containing original illustrations of diatoms with magnification levels, the majority colored green, and other material, including a photograph of three diatoms mounted on a heavy card mount; ex libris Cornelius Van Brunt, with his signature inside the front board.
