First edition, limited deluxe issue, two large quarto volumes; number 248 of 250 copies signed by Stanley in ink on the limitation page; titles printed in red and black; illustrated with engraved portrait frontispieces in each volume, 2 photogravure plates, 38 wood-engraved plates mounted on India paper, 6 sepia etchings signed in pencil by artist M.G. Montbard, 4 colored maps, (3 of which are folding and 2 mounted on linen), an autograph facsimile leaf, and numerous text illustrations; bound in original dark brown half morocco over parchment boards, front panels lettered with gilt and decorated with a gilt flag and fern motif, spines gilt-lettered, top edges gilt with the others uncut, silk page markers nicely preserved (many plates with light foxing and toning, some tissue guards chipped at outer edge; minor sunning to spines, lightly rubbed); housed in publisher's slipcase; 11 1/2 x 9 in.
