Stanton, Elizabeth Cady (1815-1902)
The Woman's Bible. Advertising Broadside.

[New York: no printer, circa 1895-1898].

Large wove paper sheet printed in regular and display wood typefaces, very nicely preserved, with a small light crease to the bottom right corner, 16 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.

The text of this advertisement lays out the basic idea behind The Woman's Bible.

"In the early nineties, a group of leading Suffragists decided that the 'Christian religion and the Christian minstry were the greatest obstacles to the spread of woman suffrage.' They concluded that the Bible should be rewritten from the woman's standpoint, but they could not persuade any scholars to make the desired changes in the translation, and so they were compelled to take the English version as it stood, and say how it should have been written." The text is footed by a bold challenge. "This is the teaching of National Suffrage Leaders. Are you willing for women who hold these views to become political powers in our country?"
