Eliza was the former slave of Confederate Vice President Stephens. She complains that she is being cheated by a man who was attending to her "dray" business. Stephens was known for caring for his ex-slaves. A jotted notation at the end of the letter hints that some sort of stipend may have been given to Eliza.<
