Szyk, Arthur (1894-1951) & Cecil Roth, ed. (1899-1970)
The Haggadah, inscribed by Szyk.

London: Beaconsfield Press, 1940.

Limited edition, quarto; number 72 of 125 copies signed by both Szyk and Roth for sale in Britain, further inscribed by Szyk to Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Brachman, "very cordially" in New York, April 1945 in ink on the front free flyleaf; English and Hebrew calligraphic text in various colors on double-parchment sheets; illustrated with 14 full-page and numerous smaller color reproductions of Szyk's elaborate original watercolors; bound in gilt-tooled full blue morocco by Sangorski & Suttcliffe, gilt turn-ins, pictorial silk doublures (leaves slightly waved); housed in the original three quarter blue morocco clamshell box, decorated in gilt; 11 x 9 1/4 in.

Szyk's magnum opus, a work, "worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has produced," stands as the most lavish of all modern Haggadahs. Crafted during a time of intense danger for Jewish people, Szyk took on the project to draw a powerful visual parallel between the oppression faced by the Jews in Egypt with their persecution under the burgeoning Nazi regime.
