Tabard started his artistic career as a designer in a silk manufacturing company in New Jersey in 1914. After a few years he moved to New York City and began to study photography at the New York Institute of Photography. In 1922, he became a portrait photographer for Bachrach studios and worked for six years in various states for the Bachrach company. Tabard moved back to his native France in 1928, opened his own studio and began to experiment with new photographic techniques. He was well acquainted with cutting edge artists of the day such as Man Ray, André Kertész, and René Magritte. Influenced by his peers and inspired to created unique works of art, Tabard began working with photomontage and solarization and soon became an expert printer as well as a well respected photographer. Even after the closing of his studio, Tabard worked with solarization, becaming a specialist on the subject.
