"I received the letter you did me the honor to write to me on 24 February concerning various provisions of the Convention of 30 April [the Louisiana Purchase Treaty] for which you seem to require explanation. . . .
"I have no doubt that the discussion that they will engender will be in perfect harmony with the principles of good faith and friendship that unite the two governments, and which France will eagerly seize the occasion to demonstrate to the United States."
