Additional Details

Tavernier was the most important mapseller in France during the first part of the seventeenth century. In 1627 he published a set of the four continents after Bertius, possibly without gaining his permission. Although crediting Bertius, the cartography more closely follows the Hondius mapping of 1618, with the completed northwest coast line, similar mapping of the Great Lakes and similar decorative ships and sea monsters. However, unlike the Hondius map, here the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego is completed, as per the Bertius map of 1624. The present example is the first state without additional toponyms such as "Neuf Amsterdam", "Pleymouth", "Accadie" and "Quiuera" added in the subsequent 1640 issue. Burden, 218.
