". . . Although my life from early manhood has been passed in the military service of our country from 1808 up to the present moment, yet I have been always an advocate for peace, whenever it could be maintained, or obtained on honorable terms; believing that war even carried on in the mildest & most humane manner possible, in most instances is a curse both to the victors & the vanquished, which I fear may be the case in the present instance; hence I am, & have been from its commencement, in favor of, as well as anxious to see an honorable peace brought about; as much by forbearance, moderation & a strict adherence to justice as by the terror of our arms; so as to let them & the world see while we would submit to nothing that was wrong, we would ask nothing from others that was unjust or improper from a nation which was greatly weaker than ours. . . ."
