. . . [T]his summer I was engrossed in a task which took up all my time, and now I am travelling so that there is always something preventing me from replying to the letters I receive. I shall be in Paris soon . . . ."
Tchaikovsky had begun work on his Symphony No. 5 in May of 1888--this is perhaps the engrossing task referred to in the letter. While in Leipzig, Tchaikovsky was taking a break during his European conducting tour; two days after writing this letter, he left for Geneva to continue the tour.
