Additional Details

a letter with rare sexual innuendo, some of it quite graphic. "A lady of this town, against whom there had never rested any suspicion of madness suddenly disappeared. In about 45 days she was arrested in Chattanooga Tenn., dressed in men's attire, accompanied by one of Africa's sable sons. A thick-lipped large rough negro man, she says that the negro stold (sic) her and she was taking him to a free state, etc etc. Rather a strange theft. She has been brought back here, tried and committed to Cassville jail, where she may enjoy the comforts of the jailer till Court, when very likely she will be sent to the State penitentiary. She says the negro conjured her away (stold?), has hinted that he conjured her with about 8 inches as during this time she had been secreted in his cabin, sleeping in the same bed. . ."
