"You & Mrs. Bernard Beere's company may certainly have my play 'The Promise of May' to act at set pounds £6 a night in London, thence pound £3 a night in the provinces, four pounds £4 a night in America as you propose. Of course your company will have sole right of acting it so long as you continue to play it for at least a month during each year dating the first of year from the day when you first produce it this November and so on. I shall have all matters of detail such as guaranteeing the usual sum for 50 nights and paying half this lump sum on first signing the Agreement down to my lawyer . . . ."
The Promise of May opened at the Globe Theater on November 11, 1882 with Mrs. Bernard Beere performing the role of Dora Steer and H. Cameron the role of Dora's father.
