Additional Details

first edition, first issue, with 8-page publisher's catalogue dated July 1855 inserted at front. The Baring connection is significant as "Maud" was written about Rosa Baring, the young daughter of his wealthy Somersby neighbor. Tennyson had fallen in love with her in 1834 but she rejected him. The famous line "Come into the garden, Maud" refers to the gardens at Harrington Hall, the Barings' estate. It also contains the first book appearance of "The Charge of the Light Brigade."
