THÉODORE CHASSÉRIAU
Venus Anadyomene.

Lithograph on Chine appliqué, 1841-42. 285x227 mm; 11 1/4x9 inches, wide margins. A superb impression of this extremely scarce lithograph.

Born in the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic), Chassériau (1819-1856) was the son of a French adventurer father and Haitian mother. The family returned to Paris shortly after Chassériau's birth. As a child, Chassériau displayed precocious drawing skill; he was accepted into the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1830 and by age 11 had become the renowned Neoclassical artist's favorite student. Chassériau made close to 30 etchings and lithographs during the mid-1800s. Beraldi 25.
