THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923)

2E EXPOSITION DES ARTISTES ANIMALIERS. 1909.

19 1/2x25 1/2 inches, 49 1/2x64 3/4 cm. G. Frichots, Paris.
Condition B+: small replaced losses, time-staining and pin holes at edges; repaired tears in margins, some into image and text; minor abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on Japan.

Steinlen was a cat lover, and the animals appeared in his drawings, posters and paintings throughout his career. Two of his posters, Lait pur Sterilise and Chat Noir, justifiably rank among the most famous turn-of-the-century images of cats. The artist's Winter Cat (the cat in this poster) and Summer Cat panels were commissioned by Sagot in the same year.
