THE JEWS THE WORLD OVER. Circa 1917.
40 3/4x27 1/2 inches. Montreal Litho Co.
Condition B+: repaired tears in bottom and top margins, some affecting image, restoration in margins.
Beneath the red, white and blue bunting of the British Union Jack, and three portraits in gold ovals, a man in brown, red and white is being cut free from his bonds to go and join a group of soldiers seen in the distance in shades of khaki. A rare Candian World War One image calling Jews to enlist in the army. An extraordinary call to arms, employing three separate persuasive techniques: patronizing expectation ("Britain expects every son of Israel to do his duty."); historical association ("The Jews the world over love liberty, have fought for it & will fight for it"); and following a visual example (the man pictured is saying "you have cut my bonds and set me free-now let me help you set others free!"). Not in Magnes.
