THE "LITTLE FRIENDS"

Group of photographs and ephemera involving composer Virgil Thomson's "Little Friends."
8 items in one folder; various sizes, minimal wear.

This collection relates to American composer Virgil Thomson (1896-1989), lyricist John Latouche (1914-1956), and their well-documented bohemian circle known as "the Little Friends." Included are:

5 photographs of Latouche, various sizes and formats. In one, he is shirtless and holding a bottle of champagne; another is a comic surrealist pose in a bathtub with a Santa Claus costume as a backdrop. One shows Thomson, Latouche, author Paul Bowles, and a masked man.

A partly handwritten party invitation signed by Latouche, and an undated greeting card signed by Latouche addressed to Gertrude [Stein?].

Two-sheet printed program for "A Birthday Concert for Virgil Thomson," with the original envelope hand-addressed to "Mrs. Dunham." Marian Chase Dunham (1915-1951) was the widow of Harry Hickenlooper Dunham (1910-1943), a cinematographer who had died in World War Two. Both were members of the "Little Friends" circle. All are discussed in Howard Pollack's biography, "The Ballad of John Latouche: An American Lyricist's Life and Work."
