THEATRE DU VAUDEVILLE / SAISON VIENNOISE. Two posters. 1911.
45 1/4x30 1/2 inches.
Condition varies, each approximately A-: vetical and horizontal folds; minor discoloration at edges and in corners.
A self-promoting artist who did illustrations for Le Rire<>, Bofa published a small pamphlet in 1911 entitled "L'Affiche Gus Bofa" in which these posters are mentioned with the title "The White Gypsies". The Saison Viennoise<> was quite an important event consisting of major performers, and productions visiting from Vienna, including symphonic orchestras, operettas and opera. These two images clearly function as a pair. Francois San Millan, in his bibliography of Bofa, suggests that these were originally printed as one large lithograph which was then cut. He thinks one or two others might exist, but up until now these are the only two that have surfaced (each of these two are numbered, "1" and "2", in the stone, which would lead one to believe that they were part of a larger series). Bofa, San Millan.
