THELMA JOHNSON STREAT (1911 - 1959)
Totem Pole Figure.

Color screenprint, circa 1945-50. 359x279 mm; 14 1/8x11 inches, full margins. A good, vibrant impression of this extremely scarce print.

This is only the second print by Thelma Johnson Streat to come to auction. Her gouache, Rabbit Man, 1941, was the first painting by an African-American woman to be exhibited and purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1942. Today, her work is found in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Honolulu Academy of the Arts.
