THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES CHOCOLATS. Circa 1895.
31 1/2x23 1/2 inches. Courmont, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration in top and bottom margins.
Depicting such a simple and charming domestic scene like this was not at all difficult for Steinlen, in this case specifically, as he has depicted his wife sipping tea and his daughter drinking cocoa under the scrutiny of the family cat. The letters are all hand drawn, which although fairly typical for Steinlen, adds an even deeper level of intimacy and warmth to the image. This is the same company that employed Mucha to design a poster. This poster is said to have directly influenced the art of American posterist Edward Penfield, whose 1897 Poster Calender<> "vividly recalled Steinlen's illustration" (Cate & Gill p. 132). Crauzat p. 135, Bargiel & Zagrodski p.41, Maitres pl. 170.
