THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) EXPOSITION A LA BODINIERE. 1894.
23x29 3/4 inches. Charles Verneau, Paris.
Condition B+: creases in image; minor restoration and losses along vertical and horizontal folds.
La Bodiniere was the exhibition hall of the Theâtre d' application, which offered a variety of attractions from art exhibits by Paris's avant garde artists to shadow plays. Monsieur Bodiniere opened his gallery to support Parisian avant garde artists. This successful exhibition of works by Steinlen was the inagural show. That year, Bodiniere also held an exhibition of the work of Ibels (who designed his own poster), and he regularly hosted the Salon des Peintres Graveurs. Steinlen chose a horizontal format for this exhibition poster (exceedingly rare for the genre), in which he delicately depicts two of his beloved cats. The remainder of the poster is filled by Steinlen's hand-drawn typography. Crauzat p. 134, Bargiel & Zagrodski p.38.
