Born in Illinois, Meteyard (1865-1928) and his family settled on Moses Hill Farm in the village of Fernhurst near Marley Common, Surrey, England, in 1916 after travelling throughout Europe, the United States East Coast and Chicago during much of the 1890s-1900s.
