THOMAS HART BENTON
Going West.

Lithograph, 1934. 293x571 mm; 11 1/2x22 1/2 inches, full margins. Printer's proof, aside from the edition of 75. Signed by the printer, George Miller, and inscribed "printer's proof" in pencil, lower left. Published by Ferargil Galleries, New York. A superb, dark, richly-inked impression of this scarce, early lithograph, with very strong contrasts.

According to a later recollection by Benton, "My first pictures were of railroad trains. Engines were the most impressive things that came into my childhood. To go down to the depot and see them come in, belching black smoke, with their big headlights shining and their bells ringing and their pistons clanking, gave me a feeling of stupendous drama, which I have not lost to this day. I scrawled crude representations of them over everything." Fath 6.
