Thomas Hill (1829-1908) left England for America with his family in 1844 and began taking classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 24. He took many sketching trips as a student to the White Mountains in New Hampshire , working alongside Hudson River School members (a group he became loosely associated with). This place as well as the Yosemite Valley remained his greatest sources of inspiration throughout his revered painting career.
