In Carleton Watkins, The Complete Mammoth Photographs Weston Naef writes that in the 1860s "Watkins made available for sale 116 mammoth-plate Yosemite subjects. Soon thereafter Thomas Houseworth & Co. offered for sale 86 mammoth-plate Yosemite views, many of which may be from Watkins negatives. Houseworth also issued mammoth-plate Yosemite prints from negatives created by Charles L. Weed, prints that have sometimes been confused with those of Watkins. Watkins is believed to have been a mentor to Eadweard Muybridge, who may have assisted Watkins in some of his work for Houseworth and who made his own series of Yosemite views in 1872, many of which relate directly to Watkins or Houseworth prints." Naef notes the relationship between Houseworth's catalogue number 42 to Watkins' photographs of the Three Brothers, which are catalogue numbers 168-72. He also notes the other photographers who made images in this same location, including Charles Weed and Eadweard Muybridge. The Getty owns a print of this photograph, without a certain attribution as to who made the negative (dated 1872).
