THOMAS LAWRENCE
Portrait of Sarah Lysons as a Child.

Pencil on cream wove paper, circa 1805. 155x137 mm; 6 1/8x5 3/8 inches.

Provenance: The Lysons family, Hempsted, near Gloucester; thence by descent to Teresa Pattinson, née Lysons, the aunt of the sitter, by 1932; private collection, New York.

Sarah Lysons was the eldest daughter of the antiquarian (and reverend) Daniel Lysons (1762-1834), author of Environs of London, 1792-96, among other works. Lawrence's oil portrait of Daniel Lysons from the early 1800s is now in the collection of the Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery. He painted a double portrait of the sitter's mother, also named Sarah Lysons, and her younger sister Charlotte, 1801-06, on the occasion of Sarah's marriage to Lysons, that is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
