THOMAS SULLY
Nicholas Biddle.

Pencil on cream laid paper, circa 1828. 180x145 mm; 7 1/8x5 3/4 inches.

Ex-collection private collection, New Jersey.

Sully (1783-1872) was an American portrait painter who was active in Philadelphia. Primarily known for his portraits of John Quincy Adams and Thomas Jefferson, his style is compared most frequently to that of the British painter Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). This drawing is a study for the same-titled oil painting, 1828, currently in the collection of the Andalusia Foundation, Pennsylvania. The subject of the portrait, Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844), was a prominent Philadelphia financier and contemporary of Sully.
