THOMAS THEODORE HEINE (1867-1948) SIMPLICISSIMUS. 1901.
133/4x133/4 inches. Hamback & Co.
Condition B+: minor foxing in margins; sharp vertical fold. Paper.
Heine charmingly depicts a delighted young artist watching a scandalized bourgeois being bitten on the nose by a black lizard emerging from the pages of the journal. The image is a direct and humorous allegory of the effect of the content of the magazine on the stuffy, old fashioned Munich aristocracy. In his usual style Heine uses flat tones and no outlining to render his illustration. DFP 1216.
